The Last Temptation of Christ is a 1988 American epic drama film directed by Martin Scorsese. It is an adaptation of the novel of the same name by Nikos Kazantzakis, which was earlier considered too controversial for the screen.

The film follows the life of Jesus Christ, from his birth to his crucifixion. It is set in the first century AD and stars Willem Dafoe as Jesus. The film portrays Jesus as a complex human being who is struggling with his own identity, and who is tempted by Satan to abandon his mission and live a normal life.

The film is divided into three parts. The first part follows Jesus’ childhood and the events leading up to his baptism by John the Baptist. The second part focuses on Jesus’ ministry, including his teachings and miracles. The third part examines Jesus’ final days, including his trial, his crucifixion, and the aftermath.

The film is controversial for its portrayal of Jesus as a human being with doubts and fears, rather than a divine being. It also includes a dream sequence in which Jesus is tempted by Satan to abandon his mission and live a normal life.
