Synopsis – What to Expect from “Bringing Out the Dead”
Bringing Out the Dead is a 1999 American drama film directed by Martin Scorsese and written by Paul Schrader. The film stars Nicolas Cage as Frank Pierce, a burned-out paramedic who works the night shift in a New York City ambulance service.
The film follows Frank over the course of three days as he struggles to keep himself sane while attempting to save lives. He and his partner Larry (John Goodman) respond to numerous emergency calls, including a young woman who has overdosed on drugs, a car accident victim, and a homeless man suffering from a heart attack. As the night progresses, Frank’s mental state begins to deteriorate, and he begins to hallucinate about the people he has been unable to save.
Frank’s ex-girlfriend Mary (Patricia Arquette) visits him in an attempt to reignite their relationship, but Frank is too consumed by his guilt and depression to be able to connect with her. He also meets a young drug addict named Noel (Marc Anthony) who is looking for his father. Frank takes a liking to Noel and tries to help him, but his attempts are in vain.
Frank’s mental state continues to deteriorate, and he begins to see visions of the people he has been unable to save. He also begins to have visions of his father, who died when Frank was young. As the night progresses, Frank’s guilt and depression reach a breaking point, and he begins to contemplate suicide.
