The film follows the story of Charlie (De Niro), a small-time Italian-American hoodlum in New York City’s Little Italy. Charlie is torn between his loyalty to his friend Johnny Boy (Keitel) and his desire to escape the criminal lifestyle.
Charlie works for his uncle Giovanni (Cesare Danova), a local crime boss and loan shark. He is also in love with Theresa (Amy Robinson), a girl from a strict Catholic family. Charlie and Johnny Boy are childhood friends and have a complicated relationship. Johnny Boy owes money to Giovanni and is constantly getting into trouble. Charlie tries to protect him but his loyalty is tested when he discovers that Johnny Boy is involved in a burglary.
Meanwhile, Charlie’s relationship with Theresa is strained due to her family’s disapproval of his criminal lifestyle. Charlie is also struggling with his faith and his own moral code. He is constantly torn between his loyalty to his friend and his desire to escape the criminal lifestyle.
The film culminates in a violent confrontation between Charlie and Johnny Boy. Charlie is forced to make a difficult decision and ultimately chooses loyalty over love.
