Synopsis/Plot
Kundun is a 1997 epic biographical film written by Melissa Mathison and directed by Martin Scorsese. The film tells the story of Tenzin Gyatso, the 14th Dalai Lama, from the time of his recognition as the reincarnation of the Dalai Lama in 1937 to his exile in India in 1959 following the Chinese invasion of Tibet.
The film opens with the search for the 14th Dalai Lama, a search that takes the Tibetan monks to the remote village of Taktser in Amdo province. There, they discover a small boy, Tenzin Gyatso, who is the reincarnation of the previous Dalai Lama. Tenzin is taken to the Potala Palace in Lhasa, where he is given a traditional education in Buddhist philosophy, history, and language.
The film follows Tenzin’s journey as he grows up in the Potala Palace, learning about his role as the spiritual and political leader of Tibet. As he matures, Tenzin is faced with a difficult decision: whether to accept the Chinese government’s offer of autonomy for Tibet or to stand up for Tibetan independence.
The film follows Tenzin’s struggles with the Chinese government and his eventual exile to India
