Synopsis – What to Expect from “Hunger”
Hunger is a powerful and moving drama set in Northern Ireland in 1981. It tells the story of Bobby Sands, a member of the Irish Republican Army, who leads a hunger strike in protest of the British government’s policy of criminalizing IRA members.
The movie begins with Bobby Sands (Michael Fassbender) in a prison cell, writing a letter to his family. He is a political prisoner and a member of the IRA, and he is determined to make a stand against the British government’s policy of criminalizing IRA members.
In the prison, Bobby meets fellow inmate Raymond Lohan (Stuart Graham), who is also a member of the IRA. Bobby and Raymond form a bond, and Bobby begins to plan a hunger strike in protest of the British government’s policy. He recruits nine other inmates to join him in the hunger strike, and they become known as the “H-Block Martyrs”.
As the hunger strike progresses, Bobby’s health deteriorates and he becomes increasingly weak. He is determined to continue the strike, however, and he rallies the other inmates to stay strong. The British government refuses to negotiate with the prisoners, and Bobby’s health continues to decline.
Meanwhile, Bobby’s family and friends rally to support him and the other hunger strikers. Bobby’s girlfriend, Mary (Laine Megaw), becomes a key figure in the struggle, and she works tirelessly to bring attention to their cause.
