Synopsis – What to Expect from “New York, New York”
New York, New York is a 1977 musical romantic comedy-drama film directed by Martin Scorsese. It tells the story of a singer-songwriter, Francine Evans (Liza Minnelli), and a saxophone player, Jimmy Doyle (Robert De Niro), and their tumultuous relationship as they pursue their dreams in New York City.
The film begins with Francine and Jimmy meeting at a nightclub in New York City. Francine is an aspiring singer, while Jimmy is a struggling saxophone player. Despite their differences, the two quickly form a bond and begin a passionate romance.
The couple’s relationship is tested, however, when Francine’s career takes off and Jimmy’s struggles to make it as a musician. Jimmy’s pride and jealousy cause him to become increasingly possessive, leading to arguments and eventually a break-up.
With their relationship over, Francine and Jimmy go their separate ways. Francine continues to pursue her singing career and finds success, while Jimmy takes a job playing in a lounge band.
One night, Francine and Jimmy cross paths again and the two finally reconcile. They agree to start over and make a commitment to each other.
The film culminates with Francine and Jimmy performing together in a show at Radio City Music Hall. The two perform a duet of their own song, “Happy Endings,” which symbolizes the end of their tumultuous relationship and the beginning of a new one
