Synopsis – What to Expect from “The Age of Innocence”
The Age of Innocence is a 1993 film adaptation of the 1920 novel of the same name by Edith Wharton. The film is set in New York City in the 1870s and tells the story of Newland Archer, a well-to-do lawyer who is engaged to a woman from a socially prominent family.
Newland is content with his engagement to May Welland, but his life is thrown into upheaval when he meets her cousin, the Countess Ellen Olenska. The Countess is a free-spirited woman who has recently returned to New York after separating from her abusive husband. Newland is immediately drawn to her and the two begin a passionate affair.
At the same time, Newland is pressured by his fiancée’s family to break off the affair and to remain loyal to May. He is torn between his feelings for Ellen and his desire to maintain his social standing.
The film follows Newland as he struggles to choose between his feelings for Ellen and his commitment to May. Along the way, he must confront the social expectations of the time and the hypocrisy of his peers. In the end, Newland must make a choice between the two women, ultimately deciding to stay true to his commitment to May.
The Age of Innocence is a thought-provoking film about the power of social conventions and the consequences of following one’s heart. It is a poignant exploration of love, loyalty, and the cost
