Synopsis – What to Expect from “House of Games”
House of Games is a 1987 crime thriller directed by David Mamet and starring Joe Mantegna, Lindsay Crouse, and Mike Nussbaum. The film follows Margaret Ford (Crouse), a psychiatrist who finds herself drawn into the world of a con artist named Mike (Mantegna).
The film begins with Margaret going to Mike’s office, a bar called the House of Games, to ask for help with a patient. Mike agrees to help her, but only if she agrees to help him with a con he’s planning. Intrigued, Margaret agrees.
The con involves Mike and his partner, George (Nussbaum), convincing a wealthy gambler named Billy (J.T. Walsh) to bet on a rigged horse race. Margaret is to pose as a gambler and help Mike and George win the bet.
When Billy realizes the race is rigged, he threatens to kill Mike and George. Margaret intervenes and convinces Billy to let them go. As a reward for her help, Mike reveals to Margaret the truth about his con.
The next day, Margaret visits Mike again and reveals that she knows the truth. Mike decides to teach her the art of the con. He shows her the tricks of the trade, and soon Margaret becomes an adept con artist.
