Synopsis/Plot
Do the Right Thing is a powerful and thought-provoking 1989 drama that follows a day in the life of a Brooklyn neighborhood. The film is set during a particularly hot summer day and follows the lives of the various inhabitants of the area. The main character is Mookie, a young African-American man who works at a local pizzeria owned by Sal, an Italian-American. The film examines the racial tensions that exist in the community, as well as the growing frustration of the people of color who are forced to live in a largely white-dominated neighborhood.
The film opens with Mookie delivering pizzas to the neighborhood. He meets and interacts with many of the people who live there, including his sister, Jade, and her son, who are struggling to make ends meet. As the day progresses, racial tensions begin to simmer and eventually erupt into violence. The film examines the events leading up to the violence, as well as the aftermath.
