Synopsis – What to Expect from “The Straight Story”
The Straight Story is a 1999 drama directed by David Lynch. It is based on the true story of Alvin Straight, an elderly man from Laurens, Iowa, who rode a lawnmower on a 240-mile journey across the state of Iowa and into Wisconsin to visit his ailing brother Lyle.
The film begins with Alvin, a 73-year-old man living in a small Midwestern town, who has been diagnosed with an incurable eye condition. He is told that he will soon be blind and is advised to start making arrangements for his care. Alvin is determined to make one last journey before he goes blind, so he sets out to visit his estranged brother Lyle, who is living in Wisconsin.
Alvin is unable to drive due to his age and failing eyesight, so he decides to ride his 1966 John Deere lawnmower on a 240-mile journey across the state of Iowa and into Wisconsin. Along the way, Alvin meets many interesting characters and experiences a variety of adventures as he makes his way towards his destination.
As Alvin gets closer to his destination, he begins to reflect on his life and the decisions he has made. He comes to terms with the fact that he has been estranged from his brother for many years, and he realizes that he must make amends for his past mistakes.
