Synopsis/Plot
The Elephant Man is a 1980 American drama film directed by David Lynch and starring John Hurt, Anthony Hopkins, Anne Bancroft, John Gielgud, Wendy Hiller, Michael Elphick, Hannah Gordon, and Freddie Jones. It is based on the true story of Joseph Merrick, a severely deformed man in 19th century London. The film follows Merrick’s experiences as he struggles to make his way through a cruel and intolerant society.
The film opens with a brief introduction to Merrick’s life, showing his extreme deformities. He is a circus freak, abused and exploited by his “owner” and the audience. Eventually, Merrick is rescued by Dr. Frederick Treves, who brings him to the London Hospital. There, Merrick is made comfortable and begins to learn how to interact with the world around him.
At the hospital, Merrick meets a variety of people, including the hospital staff, the local clergy, and even the Queen of England.
