Synopsis/Plot
The Rookie is a 2002 sports drama film directed by John Lee Hancock and starring Dennis Quaid. The film is based on the true story of Jim Morris, a high school teacher and baseball coach who had a remarkable comeback as a rookie player for the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.
After suffering a shoulder injury in his senior year of high school, Jim Morris (Dennis Quaid) gives up his dreams of becoming a professional baseball player. He goes on to become a high school chemistry teacher and baseball coach in Big Lake, Texas. Despite his age and lack of experience, his team of misfit players is determined to make it to the state championship. After making a deal with his team, Jim agrees to try out for the major leagues if they win the championship.
Against all odds, Jim’s team wins the championship and he makes good on his promise. He attends a tryout for the Tampa Bay Devil Rays and impresses everyone with his pitching speed. Jim is offered a contract and makes a remarkable comeback as a rookie player in the major leagues.
The Rookie follows Jim’s journey from a small-town teacher to a major league pitcher. Along the way, he has to face his own self-doubts
