Synopsis/Plot
Flubber is a 1997 American science-fiction comedy film directed by Les Mayfield and written by Hughes, based on the 1961 novel The Absent-Minded Professor by Samuel W. Taylor. The film stars Robin Williams as Professor Philip Brainard, a professor of robotics and chemistry at Medfield College who discovers a mysterious green goo-like substance that he names “Flubber”.
When Brainard is distracted by his upcoming wedding to fellow professor Sara Jean Reynolds, he accidentally creates Flubber, a rubbery, bouncy substance that has the power to defy gravity. Brainard takes advantage of Flubber’s powers to save his college from foreclosure and to outwit the crooked businessman Alonzo Hawk, who wants to buy the college.
Flubber is a light-hearted comedy with slapstick humor, visual effects, and a colorful cast of characters. Williams brings his trademark energy to the role of the absent-minded professor, while Joan Cusack, Clancy Brown, and Wil Wheaton play the supporting roles. The film features a number of humorous musical numbers, including “Puttin’ on the Ritz” and “It’s Raining Flubber”.
