Synopsis – What to Expect from “Other People”

Other People is a 2016 American comedy-drama film written and directed by Chris Kelly. The film follows a struggling comedy writer, David (Jesse Plemons), who moves back to his childhood home in Sacramento, California to help his mother, Joanne (Molly Shannon), care for his dying father, Joel (Bradley Whitford).

When David arrives, he finds his mother exhausted from caring for his father and struggling to cope with his imminent death. David’s return home brings up a lot of unresolved issues between him and his family, particularly with his sister, Claire (Maude Apatow). David also struggles to adjust to being back in his hometown, and finds himself confronting his own feelings of loneliness and insecurity.

As the weeks pass, David and his family adjust to life with his father’s illness. He and his sister become closer, and he begins to develop a relationship with his mother. He also begins to reconnect with his old friends, and finds himself drawn to his neighbor, Paul (Zach Woods). As his father’s condition worsens, David begins to find comfort in his writing, which helps him to process his feelings about his father’s illness and his own life.

The film culminates with a powerful and emotional scene in which David and his family come together to say goodbye to his father. In the end, David finds solace in his newfound understanding of his family and his own feelings. He is able to move forward
