Synopsis – What to Expect from “Philomena”
Philomena is a 2013 British drama film directed by Stephen Frears and written by Steve Coogan and Jeff Pope. It stars Judi Dench and Steve Coogan in the lead roles.
The movie tells the true story of Philomena Lee (Judi Dench), an elderly Irish woman who is on a quest to find her long-lost son, Anthony, who was taken from her by nuns at the convent where she was forced to work in penance for her “sin” of becoming pregnant out of wedlock.
The story begins when Philomena meets Martin Sixsmith (Steve Coogan), a former BBC journalist who has been recently fired from his job. Martin is initially reluctant to take on the story of Philomena’s search for her son, but eventually agrees to help her.
The two travel to Ireland, where they begin to uncover the truth behind Philomena’s story. They discover that in the 1950s, the nuns at the convent had sold Anthony to a wealthy American couple, and had kept the money they made from the sale.
They also find out that Anthony had died a few years prior, leaving behind a wife and daughter. Despite the sadness of this discovery, Philomena and Martin continue their search, and eventually manage to track down Anthony’s daughter.
