Synopsis/Plot
Manchester by the Sea is a 2016 American drama film written and directed by Kenneth Lonergan. The film stars Casey Affleck, Michelle Williams, Kyle Chandler, and Lucas Hedges.
The story follows Lee Chandler, a depressed, brooding janitor living in Boston, Massachusetts. After his older brother Joe dies, Lee is informed that he has been named the legal guardian of his teenage nephew, Patrick. Reluctantly, Lee returns to his hometown of Manchester-by-the-Sea, Massachusetts, to take care of Patrick and face the memories of the tragedy that drove him away years earlier.
The film explores the themes of grief, family, and redemption as Lee struggles to come to terms with his past and find a way to move forward. Along the way, he must confront his own inner demons and come to terms with the mistakes he has made.
The film features an outstanding performance by Casey Affleck, who won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his portrayal of Lee. The film also features stellar performances from Michelle Williams, Kyle Chandler, and Lucas Hedges.
