Synopsis/Plot
Freedom Writers is a 2007 drama film directed by Richard LaGravenese and starring Hilary Swank, Scott Glenn, Imelda Staunton, Patrick Dempsey, and April Lee Hernandez. The film is based on the book The Freedom Writers Diary, written by the Freedom Writers, a group of students from Woodrow Wilson High School in Long Beach, California.
The film follows Erin Gruwell (Swank), a young and idealistic teacher who is assigned to teach a class of at-risk students at Woodrow Wilson High School in Long Beach. Gruwell finds her students to be hostile and uncooperative, but she is determined to make a difference in their lives. She introduces them to literature and writing, and encourages them to tell their stories. Through her efforts, Gruwell helps her students overcome their differences and find common ground.
The film is set in the early 1990s, in the midst of racial tension and gang violence in Long Beach. Gruwell’s students come from a variety of backgrounds, including African-American, Latino, and Cambodian. Despite their differences, Gruwell helps them to learn to trust and respect one another, and to find their voice through writing.
