Synopsis – What to Expect from “The Patriot”
The Patriot is a 1998 American historical war drama film directed by Roland Emmerich, starring Mel Gibson, Heath Ledger, Joely Richardson and Jason Isaacs.
The film is set during the American Revolutionary War, and follows Benjamin Martin (Gibson), a reluctant hero who is drawn into the conflict against his better judgment. Martin is a widower and a veteran of the French and Indian War, who is trying to live a quiet life on his farm with his seven children. When the war comes to Martin’s doorstep, he is forced to choose between his pacifist beliefs or taking up arms to defend his family and his home.
After his eldest son Gabriel (Ledger) joins the Continental Army, Martin reluctantly agrees to fight for the cause of liberty. He rallies local militia to defend his home and the neighboring community of Pembroke. In the process, he comes into conflict with the ruthless British Colonel William Tavington (Isaacs), who will stop at nothing to crush the rebellion.
Martin leads the militia in a series of daring raids against the British forces, and his courage and leadership inspire the local citizens to join the fight for freedom. But as the war progresses, Martin is forced to confront the horrors of war and the cost of freedom. In the end, Martin and his militia are able to defeat Tavington and his troops, and win the freedom they have been fighting for.
