Synopsis – What to Expect from “Running on Empty”
Running on Empty is a 1988 drama directed by Sidney Lumet and starring River Phoenix, Christine Lahti, Martha Plimpton, and Judd Hirsch. The story follows the lives of two parents, Arthur and Annie Pope (Lahti and Hirsch), who are on the run from the FBI due to their involvement in a bombing of a napalm laboratory 25 years earlier.
The Pope family, including their two sons, Danny (River Phoenix) and Harry (Jonas Abry), have been living on the run for the past 25 years, moving from place to place and keeping a low profile. Arthur and Annie have done their best to provide a normal life for their sons, but now, with Danny about to turn 18, the family is forced to confront the consequences of their past.
Danny, a talented pianist, is accepted to a prestigious music school in New York City, but his parents are worried that if he moves there, he will be caught by the FBI. They encourage Danny to stay with them, but he is determined to pursue his dream and decides to go to New York.
Meanwhile, Harry is having a difficult time adjusting to life on the run, and his parents’ refusal to let him go to college. He begins to rebel against his parents, causing tension in the family.
When Danny arrives in New York, he quickly realizes that his parents’ past is catching up to him. He is contacted by an FBI agent
