Synopsis – What to Expect from “Network”
Network is a 1976 American satirical black comedy-drama film written by Paddy Chayefsky and directed by Sidney Lumet. The film stars Faye Dunaway, William Holden, Peter Finch, and Robert Duvall, and features Wesley Addy, Ned Beatty, and Beatrice Straight.
The film tells the story of Howard Beale, a news anchor at the UBS television network who has become increasingly volatile and unpredictable, and his attempts to regain his sanity and career.
The film opens with a scene of Howard Beale (William Holden) delivering a speech from a rooftop. He announces that he is going to commit suicide on live television. This causes a stir in the television news industry, and the UBS network executives decide to use Beale’s announcement as a ratings ploy.
Meanwhile, Diana Christensen (Faye Dunaway), the ambitious head of programming at UBS, is trying to come up with a new show that will boost the network’s ratings. She decides to feature Beale’s suicide attempt on her show, Network, and uses it to promote her own agenda.
The show is a success, and Beale’s ratings skyrocket. But Beale’s mental health continues to deteriorate, and his increasingly erratic behavior begins to threaten the ratings of the show. Diana, concerned about the ratings, decides to use Beale’s on-air breakdown as a way to boost ratings even further.
