Synopsis/Plot
My Own Private Idaho is a 1991 American independent drama film written and directed by Gus Van Sant. It is a loose adaptation of Shakespeare’s Henry IV, Part 1 and follows two hustlers, Mike Waters (River Phoenix) and Scott Favor (Keanu Reeves), as they embark on a journey of self-discovery through the American Northwest.
The story follows Mike, a young street hustler from Portland, Oregon, who suffers from narcolepsy. After his best friend, Scott, leaves him to pursue a career in politics, Mike embarks on a journey to find his long-lost mother. Along the way, he meets a variety of people, including a wealthy Italian businessman (Udo Kier) and a transgender streetwalker (Willem Dafoe).
The film is a meditation on the struggles of homelessness, addiction, and identity. It features a dreamlike visual style, with Van Sant’s signature use of long takes and slow motion. The film also features an eclectic soundtrack, featuring music from artists such as The Smiths, Nirvana, and David Bowie.
My Own Private Idaho is a unique and powerful exploration of the human condition, and a timeless classic of independent cinema.
