Synopsis/Plot
The Devils is a 1971 British historical drama horror film directed by Ken Russell and starring Oliver Reed and Vanessa Redgrave. Based on the 1952 book The Devils of Loudun by Aldous Huxley, the film is a dramatized historical account of the rise and fall of Urbain Grandier, a 17th-century Roman Catholic priest accused of witchcraft following the supposed possessions of sexually repressed nuns.
Set in the small French town of Loudun in 1634, the film follows Urbain Grandier (Reed), a priest who has been appointed as the town’s guardian. Grandier is a respected and powerful figure in the town, and is well-liked by the people. He is also a womanizer, which causes tension between him and the local nuns, led by Sister Jeanne (Redgrave). Sister Jeanne is a sexually repressed woman who is determined to bring down Grandier and his influence in the town.
When Grandier refuses to marry Sister Jeanne, she accuses him of witchcraft and orchestrates a witch trial. Grandier is arrested and tortured, but refuses to confess to the accusations. In the end, he is burned at the stake for his supposed crimes.
