Synopsis – What to Expect from “Welcome to the Dollhouse”
Welcome to the Dollhouse is a darkly comic coming-of-age story about Dawn Wiener, an awkward, unpopular seventh-grader who is the target of constant ridicule and humiliation by her peers. She is an outcast in her middle-class New Jersey suburb, where she is constantly teased for her braces, her boyish clothing, and her nerdy interests.
Dawn’s only solace is her younger brother Mark, with whom she shares a close bond, and her older sister Missy, who is a popular cheerleader. However, Missy is often too busy to pay attention to Dawn, and Dawn’s parents are too preoccupied with their own lives to offer her much support.
Dawn’s life takes a turn for the worse when her parents hire a new babysitter, Steve, who turns out to be a creepy older man. Steve begins to make advances towards Dawn, and she is too embarrassed to tell her parents.
Meanwhile, Dawn’s social status at school continues to decline. She gets into a fight with a popular girl, and her tormentors begin to call her “Wiener Dog.” Desperate for attention, she begins to act out, and her behavior gets her into trouble with the school principal.
Dawn eventually finds an unlikely ally in a nerdy classmate, Brandon, who is also the target of bullying. With Brandon’s help, Dawn begins to find the courage to stand up for
