Synopsis – What to Expect from “Murder by Death”
Murder by Death is a 1976 American comedy murder mystery film directed by Robert Moore and written by Neil Simon.
The film follows five of the world’s greatest detectives, each invited by Lionel Twain (Truman Capote) to his isolated mansion in order to solve a murder mystery. The detectives include the bumbling Inspector Sidney Wang (Peter Sellers), the hard-boiled Sam Diamond (Peter Falk), the mysterious Jessica Marbles (Eileen Brennan), the sophisticated Belgian detective, D.C. (David Niven), and the Chinese detective, Sidney Wang (Peter Sellers).
The five detectives arrive at the mansion and are surprised to find that there is no body and no crime scene. Twain then reveals that he has invited them to his mansion in order to solve a murder mystery. He has set up a series of clues and puzzles that the detectives must solve in order to discover the murderer.
The detectives soon discover that all of the clues point to Twain himself as the murderer. However, when they confront him, he reveals that he is actually a victim of a murder plot, and that the real murderer is someone else in the house.
The detectives then race against time to uncover the identity of the real murderer before they can be killed. Along the way, they must deal with a host of colorful characters, including a butler (Alec Guinness) and a mysterious servant (James Coco).
