Synopsis/Plot
Cruel Intentions is a 1999 American romantic drama film directed by Roger Kumble and starring Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Phillippe, Reese Witherspoon, and Selma Blair. The film is a modern-day adaptation of the classic 18th-century French novel Les Liaisons Dangereuses by Pierre Choderlos de Laclos.
The film follows the wealthy, popular and manipulative Kathryn Merteuil (Gellar) as she schemes to ruin the reputation of her ex-lover’s new girlfriend, the virtuous Annette Hargrove (Witherspoon). Kathryn and her stepbrother Sebastian (Phillippe) make a wager in which he must deflower Annette in order for Kathryn to win.
The film explores the themes of power, manipulation, and betrayal as Kathryn and Sebastian’s relationship is tested by their cruel intentions towards Annette. Along the way, Sebastian falls in love with Annette, while Kathryn’s own feelings for him are rekindled.
The film features a star-studded cast, including Reese Witherspoon in her breakout role as Annette, and Selma Blair as Kathryn’s rival, the naive Cecile Caldwell
