Synopsis – What to Expect from “Dumplin'”
Dumplin’ is a 2018 American comedy-drama film directed by Anne Fletcher and written by Kristin Hahn. It is based on the 2015 novel of the same name by Julie Murphy.
The film stars Danielle Macdonald as Willowdean Dickson, a plus-size teenage girl who is struggling to come to terms with her body image. She enters a beauty pageant in her small Texas town as an act of rebellion against her mother, Rosie (Jennifer Aniston), a former beauty queen who runs the pageant.
Willowdean is joined by her friends, Ellen (Odeya Rush) and Millie (Maddie Baillio), both of whom are also plus-size. Together, they challenge the ideas of beauty that are perpetuated by the pageant and their town.
Willowdean also meets Bo (Luke Benward), a boy who works at the local fast food restaurant. Bo is kind and supportive of Willowdean and her friends, and they quickly form a bond.
As Willowdean and her friends prepare for the pageant, they are met with resistance from the townspeople who do not agree with their decision to enter the pageant. Rosie, too, is initially not supportive of Willowdean’s decision, but eventually comes to understand her daughter’s motivations.
