Synopsis – What to Expect from “Velvet Goldmine”
Velvet Goldmine is a 1998 British-American musical drama film set in Britain in the 1970s. It tells the story of Brian Slade, a glam rock star whose life and career are followed by a British music journalist.
The film begins in the present day with the journalist, Arthur Stuart, being asked to write an article about Slade’s life. He recalls his teenage years when he idolized Slade and the glam rock movement. Slade was a mysterious and androgynous figure who seemed to be a symbol of the glam rock movement with his outrageous costumes and wild performances.
Slade’s career is at its peak when tragedy strikes. He is shot on stage during a concert and his career is ended. After this event, Slade disappears and is never heard from again.
Arthur embarks on a journey to discover what happened to Slade. He interviews Slade’s former manager, his former bandmates, and other people who knew him. Along the way, he discovers that Slade was involved in a love triangle with two other glam rockers, Curt Wild and Mandy Slade.
Arthur eventually discovers that Slade is alive and living in a small town in Wales. He visits Slade and finds that he is living a quiet life with his wife and son. Slade reveals that he faked his own death in order to escape the glam rock scene and start a new life.
