Anne of Green Gables: The Sequel is a 1987 Canadian drama film based on the 1908 novel Anne of Avonlea by Lucy Maud Montgomery. The film is a sequel to the 1985 film Anne of Green Gables and follows Anne Shirley as she grows up and embarks on a new chapter in her life.
The film begins with Anne Shirley (Megan Follows) now a young woman living at Green Gables with her adoptive parents, Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert (Colleen Dewhurst and Richard Farnsworth). Anne is now a teacher at the local school and is a beloved member of the Avonlea community.
One day, Anne is approached by Gilbert Blythe (Jonathan Crombie), her former classmate and longtime admirer, who has just been appointed the new schoolteacher. Despite her initial reservations, Anne quickly falls in love with Gilbert and they soon become engaged.
At the same time, Anne is offered a prestigious teaching position in a far away college, and she is torn between accepting the offer and staying with Gilbert in Avonlea. Meanwhile, Marilla’s health is failing and she is forced to move into a nursing home.
Anne must decide whether to stay with Gilbert and take care of her ailing foster mother, or accept the teaching position and pursue her own dreams. Along the way, Anne learns valuable lessons about love, loyalty, and the importance of family.
