Synopsis – What to Expect from “The Picture of Dorian Gray”
The Picture of Dorian Gray is a 1945 film adaptation of Oscar Wilde’s novel of the same name. The film follows the story of Dorian Gray, a handsome young man who has a wish granted to remain young and beautiful forever.
The movie opens with Dorian Gray arriving in London and meeting Lord Henry Wotton, a hedonistic aristocrat who introduces him to a life of pleasure and luxury. Henry encourages Dorian to pursue a life of indulgence and encourages him to make the most of his youth and beauty.
Dorian meets and falls in love with the beautiful actress Sybil Vane. He proposes to her and she accepts, but their relationship is cut short when Dorian realizes that he is not in love with her and decides to break off the engagement.
Meanwhile, Dorian’s portrait is being painted by the artist Basil Hallward. Dorian realizes that the portrait is a reflection of himself and that it is aging while he remains young. He makes a wish that the portrait will age instead of him, and his wish is granted.
Dorian begins to lead a life of debauchery and excess, and his portrait reflects the changes in his character. He is eventually consumed by his own vanity and his soul is corrupted.
