Synopsis – What to Expect from “Young Mr. Lincoln”
Young Mr. Lincoln is a 1939 American biographical film about the early life of President Abraham Lincoln, directed by John Ford and starring Henry Fonda in the title role.
The film begins with a young Abraham Lincoln (Henry Fonda) returning to his hometown of Springfield, Illinois, after a long absence. He reunites with his old friend, John Stuart (John Carradine), who is now a lawyer. Lincoln is a man of simple means and a self-taught lawyer, and Stuart encourages him to become a full-fledged attorney.
Lincoln takes on a case involving two young men accused of murder. He initially believes that the two men are innocent, but soon discovers that one of them is guilty. He defends the innocent man and helps to free him, while the guilty man is sentenced to death. Lincoln’s success in the case brings him fame and recognition.
The movie then follows Lincoln’s life as he continues to practice law and eventually enters politics. In the process, he meets and falls in love with Mary Todd (Marjorie Weaver). The two eventually marry, and Lincoln is elected to the United States House of Representatives.
As the years pass, Lincoln becomes increasingly aware of the growing differences between the North and the South, and he is determined to end slavery. He ultimately leads the nation through the American Civil War and the passage of the Thirteenth Amendment, which abolished slavery.
