Synopsis/Plot
You Were Never Really Here is a 2017 psychological thriller film directed by Lynne Ramsay and written by Ramsay and Jonathan Ames, based on the novel of the same name by Ames. The film stars Joaquin Phoenix as Joe, a traumatized veteran, who now works as an enforcer for a New York City mobster. When a young girl goes missing, Joe is hired to find her and bring her back safely. As he navigates the dark underworld of New York City, he finds himself in a life-and-death struggle to protect the girl and save himself.
The film follows Joe, a veteran who is suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder and survivor’s guilt. He works as a hired gun for a mobster, doing whatever it takes to get the job done.
