Synopsis – What to Expect from “Yentl”
Yentl is a 1983 American romantic musical drama film directed, co-written, co-produced, and starring Barbra Streisand. The film is based on the play of the same name written by Leah Napolin and Isaac Bashevis Singer.
The story follows Yentl (Barbra Streisand), a young Jewish girl living in an Ashkenazi shtetl in Poland in the early 20th century. Yentl is a bright and inquisitive girl who dreams of a life of learning and scholarship. Her father, Rebbe Mendel, recognizes her intelligence and encourages her to study the Talmud, a book of Jewish religious teachings. But Yentl is forbidden from studying at the all-male yeshiva.
In order to pursue her dream, Yentl disguises herself as a boy and takes on the identity of Anshel. With this new identity, she enrolls in the yeshiva and begins to study the Talmud.
Yentl soon finds herself in a complex love triangle between her childhood friend Avigdor (Mandy Patinkin) and Hadass (Amy Irving), Avigdor’s betrothed. Yentl is deeply in love with Avigdor, but he is in love with Hadass. Yentl must then grapple with her feelings for Avigdor, while also facing the consequences of her deception.
