Synopsis – What to Expect from “Yankee Doodle Dandy”
Yankee Doodle Dandy is a musical biopic of the life of George M. Cohan, an American song-and-dance man who wrote some of the most popular American songs of the early 20th century. The film follows Cohan’s life from his early days as a vaudeville performer to his rise to stardom as a Broadway star, and his eventual induction into the United States Army during World War I.
The film begins with Cohan’s early life in Providence, Rhode Island, where he grew up as the son of a vaudeville performer. After a brief stint in the Navy, Cohan returns home and begins to perform in vaudeville shows alongside his father and sister. He soon begins writing his own songs and becomes a star of the stage. His songs become incredibly popular, and he is soon invited to appear on Broadway.
On Broadway, Cohan’s career continues to skyrocket, and he is soon able to purchase his own theater. He continues to write and perform his own songs, and eventually even produces his own musicals. Cohan’s success continues until World War I, when he decides to enlist in the Army. He is eventually promoted to the rank of Major and is sent to France.
In France, Cohan is able to continue performing, and his songs become popular among the troops. After the war, Cohan returns to the United States and continues to write and perform his own
