At the competition, Nathan meets Zhang Mei, a Chinese student. The two form an unlikely friendship and support each other as they compete. Nathan also meets a mentor, Richard, who helps him understand his own potential and encourages him to take risks.
As Nathan begins to come out of his shell, he discovers that mathematics is not just a way to escape, but a way to connect with others. He also learns that it is possible to find success and happiness even when life is difficult.
