Synopsis – What to Expect from “Written on the Wind”
Written on the Wind is a 1956 American drama film directed by Douglas Sirk and starring Rock Hudson, Lauren Bacall, Robert Stack, and Dorothy Malone.
The film follows the story of the wealthy Hadley family, comprised of patriarch Kyle Hadley (Robert Stack), his wife Lucy (Dorothy Malone), and their two children, Marylee (Dorothy Malone) and Mitch (Rock Hudson). The family is wealthy and powerful, but their lives are marred by alcoholism, adultery, and tragedy.
The film opens with Marylee and Mitch, both of whom are trying to find their place in the world and come to terms with their family’s legacy. Marylee is a wild, reckless party girl who is determined to have her own way, while Mitch is a quiet, introspective young man who is struggling to find his identity.
Meanwhile, Kyle and Lucy’s marriage is strained by Kyle’s alcoholism and Lucy’s affair with their family friend, Robert (Robert Stack). Kyle is also dealing with the death of his brother, which has left him feeling guilty and overwhelmed.
When Marylee meets Robert, she falls in love with him and the two begin a passionate affair. This leads to a confrontation between Kyle and Robert, and Kyle begins to suspect that Robert is the father of Marylee’s unborn child.
