Synopsis – What to Expect from “Words and Pictures”
Words and Pictures is a 2014 romantic drama directed by Fred Schepisi and starring Clive Owen and Juliette Binoche. The film follows Jack Marcus (Owen), an English teacher at an elite New England prep school who is struggling with alcoholism and writer’s block. He is challenged by the arrival of a new art teacher, Dina Delsanto (Binoche), who is determined to prove that words are more powerful than pictures.
Jack and Dina clash almost immediately, as she challenges his authority and his teaching methods. Despite their differences, the two form a bond as they share their struggles with their respective crafts. As their relationship develops, Jack and Dina help each other to find inspiration and to overcome their personal issues.
The story culminates in a climactic debate between Jack and Dina in front of the entire school. Jack argues that words are more powerful than pictures, while Dina argues the opposite. With the help of their students, Jack and Dina reach a conclusion that words and pictures are both powerful in their own ways.
As the film progresses, Jack and Dina’s relationship also develops into a romantic one. They must decide if their relationship can survive the pressures of their respective professions. In the end, Jack and Dina find a way to make their relationship work, and they both learn to appreciate the power of words and pictures.
