Synopsis – What to Expect from “Wild”
Wild is a 2014 American biographical drama film directed by Jean-Marc Vallée and written by Nick Hornby, based on Cheryl Strayed’s 2012 memoir Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail.
The film follows Cheryl Strayed (Reese Witherspoon), a 26-year-old woman who decides to hike the Pacific Crest Trail alone in the wake of her mother’s death and her own drug addiction. Despite her inexperience, Cheryl is determined to complete the 2,650 mile trail, and along the way she is forced to confront her inner demons and the physical and emotional hardships of the journey.
The film begins with Cheryl’s mother, Bobbi (Laura Dern), being diagnosed with cancer. After Bobbi dies, Cheryl spirals into a deep depression and begins to abuse drugs and alcohol. In an attempt to escape her grief and regain control of her life, Cheryl decides to embark on a solo hike of the Pacific Crest Trail. She is determined to make it to the end of the trail, even though she has little experience in long-distance hiking.
As she hikes, Cheryl encounters a variety of people, including a kind-hearted stranger who helps her cross a river, a young couple who give her a ride, and an elderly woman who offers her a place to stay. Along the way, Cheryl reflects on her life and her mother’s death, and she gradually starts to heal from her grief.
