Synopsis – What to Expect from “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?”
Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? is a 1966 American black comedy-drama film directed by Mike Nichols and starring Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, George Segal, and Sandy Dennis. It is an adaptation of Edward Albee’s play of the same name.
The film tells the story of Martha (Taylor) and George (Burton), an acrimonious, aging couple who invite a young couple, Nick (Segal) and Honey (Dennis), to their home for a late-night drinking session. Martha and George’s relationship is strained, and they use the young couple to play out their psychological games. Martha and George’s verbal sparring and cruel psychological games become increasingly intense as the night wears on.
The film opens with Martha and George returning home from a faculty party at Martha’s father’s college. Martha is drunk and George is sober, and they bicker as they enter their home. Nick and Honey soon arrive, and the four of them proceed to drink and converse. As the night progresses, Martha and George’s verbal sparring becomes increasingly intense, and they reveal their tumultuous and troubled past.
The next morning, Nick and Honey wake up to find Martha and George still drinking and arguing. Martha reveals to Nick and Honey that she and George had once had a child, but the child died shortly after birth. This revelation causes a rift between Martha and George, and Martha and Honey eventually leave the house.
