Synopsis/Plot
White Palace is a 1990 romantic drama film starring Susan Sarandon and James Spader. The movie follows the story of a young, upper-class widow, Max Baron (Sarandon) who meets and falls in love with a middle-aged, blue-collar worker, Neil Klugman (Spader). Despite their differences in class and age, the two develop a passionate relationship that is tested by the disapproval of Max’s friends and family.
The movie begins with Max, a 27-year-old widow, unable to move on from the death of her husband. She works as an advertising executive and spends her nights alone in her upscale apartment. One night, while out at a bar, she meets Neil Klugman, a 45-year-old short-order cook. Despite their differences, the two bond over their shared loneliness and eventually begin a passionate affair.
Max’s friends and family are appalled by her relationship with Neil and try to convince her to break it off. Max’s father, a wealthy business tycoon, even offers her a large sum of money to end the relationship. Despite the pressure, Max and Neil’s love for each other continues to grow.
