Synopsis – What to Expect from “White Oleander”
White Oleander is a 2002 drama film starring Michelle Pfeiffer, Renée Zellweger, and Alison Lohman. It is based on the 1999 novel of the same name by Janet Fitch.
The story follows Astrid Magnussen, a teenage girl living in Los Angeles with her single mother, Ingrid. Ingrid is an artist and poet who is fiercely independent, often neglecting her daughter in the process. When Ingrid is sent to prison for murdering her boyfriend, Astrid is sent to live with a series of foster families.
Astrid struggles to adjust to her new life and to make sense of her mother’s crime. She finds comfort in the company of her foster families, and in the friendship of a young punk rocker named Mark.
Astrid’s experiences with her foster families vary from good to bad. She experiences love and acceptance from some of her foster families, while others are abusive and neglectful. She also struggles with her feelings for Mark, who is involved in a dangerous lifestyle.
As Astrid grows and matures, she begins to understand the complexities of her mother’s life and the choices she made. She also learns to accept herself and to find her own strength.
The film follows Astrid’s journey of self-discovery and healing as she navigates through her tumultuous teenage years and learns to forgive her mother
