Synopsis – What to Expect from “White Lightning”
White Lightning is a 1973 crime drama directed by Joseph Sargent and starring Burt Reynolds and Ned Beatty.
The movie follows Gator McKlusky (Reynolds), a former moonshiner who is released from prison after serving time for bootlegging. Gator is determined to get revenge on the corrupt Sheriff J.C. Connors (Beatty) who put him away.
Gator teams up with his old moonshining partner, Johnny (Bo Hopkins) and they concoct a plan to bring down Connors. They use Gator’s knowledge of moonshining to set up a still in the woods and then use it to blackmail Connors into helping them with their scheme.
In order to get Connors to cooperate, Gator and Johnny use a combination of threats and bribery. They also enlist the help of a local prostitute, Mary Lee (Jennifer Billingsley), to help them.
With the help of Mary Lee, Gator and Johnny are able to get Connors to do their bidding and the trio set out to bring down the corrupt sheriff. Along the way, Gator learns that Connors has been involved in some shady dealings and he is determined to expose the truth.
The trio eventually succeed in their mission and Gator and Johnny are able to get away with their ill-gotten gains. However, Gator realizes that he can’t keep running from the law and decides to turn himself in.
