When Trumpets Fade is a 1998 American war drama film directed by John Irvin and starring Ron Eldard, Frank Whaley, and Zak Orth. The film follows a group of American soldiers during the Battle of Hurtgen Forest in World War II.
The story starts with a group of American soldiers, led by Sergeant David Manning (Ron Eldard), making their way through the dense Hurtgen Forest in Germany. They are tasked with taking a small village held by the Germans. Along the way, they encounter a number of obstacles, including a minefield, which they must navigate safely.
The group eventually reaches the village and is met with fierce resistance from the Germans. After a long and bloody battle, the Americans are successful in taking the village, but at a heavy cost. Many of the soldiers have been killed or wounded, including Manning’s best friend, Private Joe Clemons (Frank Whaley).
With the village under their control, the soldiers are tasked with holding it against the advancing German forces. Manning and the other survivors are determined to do whatever it takes to defend the village, but they soon realize that the odds are stacked against them.
The situation becomes even more dire when a new platoon of inexperienced American soldiers arrive to take over the defense of the village. Manning and the other veterans must now teach the new recruits the harsh realities of war, while also trying to keep them alive.
