Synopsis/Plot
What’s Love Got to Do with It is a 1993 biographical musical drama film directed by Brian Gibson and starring Angela Bassett and Laurence Fishburne. The film follows the tumultuous life of singer-songwriter Tina Turner, from her rise to fame in the 1960s to her tumultuous relationship with her abusive husband, Ike Turner, and her eventual solo success in the 1980s.
The film begins with a young Tina (then known as Anna Mae Bullock) being discovered by Ike Turner and joining his band, The Kings of Rhythm. As her career begins to take off, Ike and Tina get married, and Ike’s controlling and abusive behavior begins to take a toll on Tina’s life. Despite the abuse, Tina continues to rise to fame with Ike’s help, and the two become a popular act.
However, Ike’s drug addiction and abuse eventually become too much for Tina to bear, and she decides to leave him and go solo. After a difficult divorce, Tina embarks on a successful solo career, and eventually finds love with a new man.
