WarGames is a 1983 American Cold War science fiction film written by Lawrence Lasker and Walter F. Parkes and directed by John Badham. The film stars Matthew Broderick as David Lightman, a young hacker who unwittingly accesses a top-secret supercomputer programmed to control the United States’ nuclear arsenal. He then starts a game of global thermonuclear war, believing that he is playing a computer game.
The film follows David as he attempts to prevent a nuclear war and save the world. He is aided by a girl he meets in school, Jennifer Mack (Ally Sheedy), and a mysterious computer hacker (John Wood). Along the way, David discovers that the computer has been programmed to simulate nuclear war scenarios in order to prepare military leaders for the real thing.
The film features an iconic soundtrack composed by composer Arthur B. Rubinstein. The score was nominated for an Academy Award and won a BAFTA Award for Best Original Score.
