Synopsis – What to Expect from “Walkabout”
Walkabout is a 1971 British-Australian drama film directed by Nicolas Roeg and starring Jenny Agutter and Luc Roeg. The film follows two teenage siblings, a teenage girl and her younger brother, who are stranded in the Australian outback after their father’s sudden suicide. With little hope of rescue, the two set out on a journey of self-discovery, relying on the guidance of a young Aborigine boy they meet along the way.
The film opens with the family of three, the father, the teenage girl, and her younger brother, driving through the Australian outback. As they drive, the father’s mental health deteriorates and he eventually commits suicide, leaving the two children stranded in the outback. With no hope of rescue, the two set out on a journey of survival and self-discovery.
The siblings come across a young Aborigine boy named “Walkabout”, who takes them under his wing and helps them to survive in the harsh environment. He teaches them the ways of the land and how to hunt, fish, and forage for food. Along the way, the two siblings learn to appreciate the beauty of the land and the Aborigine culture, and they form a bond with Walkabout.
