Synopsis/Plot
Wag the Dog is a 1997 comedy film starring Robert De Niro and Dustin Hoffman. The film follows the story of a spin doctor (De Niro) and a Hollywood producer (Hoffman) who join forces to fabricate a war in Albania in order to distract the American public from a presidential sex scandal.
The film begins with a Washington, D.C. spin doctor, Conrad Brean (De Niro), being called on to handle a potential political scandal just days before the presidential election. He quickly enlists the help of a Hollywood producer, Stanley Motss (Hoffman), to help him fabricate a war in Albania by creating a fake enemy and using special effects and media manipulation to make it seem real.
The two enlist a variety of people to help them, including a retired general, a CIA agent, and a mysterious woman who claims to be a Kosovo refugee. They create a fake war, complete with a fake enemy, a fake president, and a fake hero, all of which is broadcast on the news to distract the public from the presidential scandal.
Despite the success of their plan, the two must ultimately face the consequences of their actions when the truth is revealed.
