Synopsis – What to Expect from “Viceroy’s House”
Viceroy’s House is a 2017 British-Indian historical drama film directed by Gurinder Chadha and written by Chadha and Paul Mayeda Berges. The film stars Hugh Bonneville, Gillian Anderson, Manish Dayal, Huma Qureshi, and Michael Gambon.
Set in 1947, the film follows the final months of British rule in India and the ensuing partition of India and Pakistan. Lord Mountbatten (Hugh Bonneville) is sent to India as the last Viceroy, tasked with handing India back to its people. He is accompanied by his wife, Lady Edwina Mountbatten (Gillian Anderson), and their daughter, Pamela (Lily Travers).
The film follows the story of Jeet (Manish Dayal), a young Hindu man, and Aalia (Huma Qureshi), a young Muslim woman, who fall in love despite their different backgrounds. As the British prepare to leave India, they must decide whether to stay together or be separated by the newly drawn borders.
The film also follows the story of Lord Mountbatten and his struggle to balance his duty to the British Empire with his growing sympathy for the Indian people and their struggle for independence. He must also deal with the growing tensions between Hindus and Muslims, and the resulting violence and displacement.
The film culminates in the Partition of India and Pakistan, and Lord Mountbatten’s decision to leave India
