Synopsis – What to Expect from “Veronica Guerin”
Veronica Guerin is a 2003 biographical crime drama film directed by Joel Schumacher and starring Cate Blanchett in the title role. The film is based on the true story of Irish journalist Veronica Guerin, whose investigations into drug trafficking in Dublin led to her murder in 1996.
The film begins in 1996, when Veronica Guerin (Cate Blanchett) is an ambitious journalist, determined to make a name for herself by exposing the criminal underworld of Dublin. She begins to investigate the drug trade in the city, and soon discovers that the drug lord John Gilligan (Gerard McSorley) is the kingpin of the operation. She begins to write stories about him and his activities, which causes Gilligan to become increasingly angry and determined to stop her.
Veronica persists with her investigations, and eventually she is able to get enough evidence to expose Gilligan and his drug operation. However, this leads to her being targeted by Gilligan and his associates. In a desperate attempt to protect herself, she goes to the police for help, but they are unable to protect her. Eventually, Gilligan’s men catch up with her and she is brutally murdered in a drive-by shooting.
The film then shifts to the aftermath of her death, as her friends and family struggle to come to terms with her death and to find justice for her. The story follows the police investigation into her murder, and culminates in a dramatic trial
