Synopsis – What to Expect from “Vera Cruz”
Vera Cruz is a classic western movie released in 1954. Set in Mexico during the French intervention in 1866, the movie follows the adventures of two mercenaries, Joe Erin (Gary Cooper) and Baron Gustavo (Burt Lancaster).
The two men team up to join a mercenary army, but quickly find themselves at odds with each other when it comes to their motivations. Joe is only in it for the money, while the Baron is more interested in the adventure and glory of the mission.
The group is sent to Vera Cruz to escort a shipment of gold to the Mexican government. Along the way, they are pursued by a rival mercenary group led by General RamÃrez (Cesar Romero). The two groups battle each other and the Mexican army, while also having to deal with the treacherous terrain and the machinations of a beautiful Mexican widow (Denise Darcel).
The two men eventually come to a truce and work together to complete their mission. They are successful in getting the gold to the Mexican government, but the Baron is killed in the process. Joe is left alone to contemplate the cost of his mercenary lifestyle.
