Synopsis/Plot
Vanity Fair is a 2004 British-American period drama film directed by Mira Nair and adapted from William Makepeace Thackeray’s novel of the same name. The film follows the life of Becky Sharp, a young woman who is determined to make her way up in society by any means necessary.
Becky Sharp (Reese Witherspoon) is a poor but ambitious young woman determined to make her way up in the world. She uses her wit and charm to manipulate her way into the upper classes of Regency England, making powerful allies and enemies along the way. Despite her social climbing, Becky remains true to herself and refuses to be cowed by society’s expectations of her.
The film follows Becky’s journey as she navigates the treacherous waters of the upper classes, from the glittering ballrooms of London to the battlefields of the Napoleonic Wars. Along the way, she meets a variety of colorful characters, including the dashing Captain George Osborne (James Purefoy) and the cruel Marquess of Steyne (Gabriel Byrne).
